The lodge was great – complete with pool which was a welcome
relief for all children and adults. Our grand plans of hiking Geikie Gorge the
first afternoon were put aside as we set up in the oppressive heat after
washing the mud off the car and camper.
No one was interested in facing the heat – so we opted for an afternoon
swim and early night – looking forward to a day of walking and schooling. Well, in true camping fashion – flexibility
always comes first. I have to say we are
getting better and better with being flexible with whatever is thrown at
us. First thing in the morning –
suspension issues for the Romanis’s camper before they headed off on the next
leg of their trip. By this time, Nick,
who had not been interested in his breakfast at all -had thrown up and then
fallen back asleep on the banana lounge in the shade of our tree. I decided to stay and miss the hike, leaving
Ben, Sam and Larina to join the Browns in tramping through Geikie Gorge (which
was later renamed “prickle gorge”). Much
to their disappointment the hike proved to be overrun with weeds, and prickles,
making it a rather un-pleasurable experience. And poor Ben had to carry Larina on his
shoulders the whole time. If Nick and I
were going to miss a hike – this was the perfect one to miss, thank goodness. (actually the prickles must have been bad,
because Larina refused to walk on grass for the next 2 days – in fear of
getting cuts on her ankles.)
