Lucky Bay

Aqua blue water and white sand.  This place is breathtakingly romantic – straight off the cover of a magazine.  We took a drive along the beach the first afternoon we arrived, and were not surprised to see a helicopter land further around in a secluded spot.  Valentines day… it was a proposal for sure!  We thought about driving a little closer, letting the kids throw some sand around while we talked sense into them… kidding!!!  They looked very happy as they waved to us when they took off.  Ahh - where else would you want to propose?

The white sand here is an amazing colour, and more amazing in texture. So fine, it squeaks under your foot as you walk – like chalk dust, or ice.

Day 2 Adventure day, but first we should introduce a family we met back at Murpheys Haystacks SA.  Nat and Duncan – dream parents with four beautiful children – Dom, Michaela, Monique, and Francesca, who are now also camping here at Lucky Bay. The plan was to climb Frenchmans Peak together, a 3 hour walk – it was a flexible 8 8-15 start (minus Mandy, who was feeling crook, and Larina, as it would have been the hardest shoulder ride to date, for me that is…). The climb up was amazing no track as such but a steep walk up a granite hill. The views at the top were fab, and Sam and Nick did great.

Sad to leave Lucky Bay and head back to Esperance for an afternoon cleaning out dust from the dust storm Sunday morning.  (we did not appreciate living in a dust bowl at this point in time….)  Sam said his farewells to Bob – his new best mate.  Bob and Joan (gold prospectors) had spent time with Sam and Nick telling stories and information about finding gold.  They had also given the boys each a gold nugget from their collection.  Unbelievable generosity.  Sam was very appreciative, and traded back some of his fools’ gold found in the car park at Kalgoolie.  Bob showed his gratitude also – and stated that he had never seen fools’ gold up close (half his luck!)  A beautiful friendship.

Later we were sitting at Esperance Bakery with Nat and Duncan and kids eating our pies, when Bob and Joan walked by– Sam jumped to his feet to give them both a huge hug.  Ben and I just looked at each other.  This is the reason we are travelling.  Today we really felt a really strong connection to the community of travellers we were with. (could have also been that we ran into them all again in Woolworths!)
