An interesting and very long day as we drove to Victor
Harbour, only to be advised against camping at the national park on the
peninsula due to fires and storms expected tonight. Disappointed, but glad for the information,
we decided (while eating good old macca’s ice cream) to press on to
Adelaide. Eventually we found ourselves
in Brighton caravan park – on the edge of a beautiful beach. So at 4pm in the horrid heat, the hot and
hungry kids and I left Ben to put the camper up solo while we sat in the ocean
to cool down. (you may read between the
lines there – the camper was not going up very well with all of us
together…) We ended the night having
schnitzel at the lifesaving club next door.
Very glad we are not on the peninsula tonight – the storms and winds are
probably the loudest I have heard for a good while.
The following day we took a lazy approach, and spent our
time picking strawberries, and waltzing the streets of Handorff. We all enjoyed the Aboriginal art gallery
there – which gave me hope for tomorrow’s art gallery. More swims again in the beach before a
terrible nights’ sleep listening to the music from a wedding reception at the
adjoining lifesaving club till 12pm.
Funny how quickly our appreciation of the club changed… when the music
finally stopped and patrons finally got in their cars, the kids woke needing
toilets and cuddles from bad dreams. Oh
the joy of camping!
The day spent in Adelaide was good – kids absolutely loved
the museum, and managed to tolerate the art gallery for me. (Was the quickest walk through an art gallery
I have ever had – the guy at the front counter suggested we join the tour guide
who was starting his talk in 5 minutes, but with three children – was he kidding?? Ben and I glanced at each other before politely declining the offer) My favourite part of the museum though was
seeing the excited looks on the boys faces as they discovered hundreds of
butterflies, moths, and insects pinned to the bottom of draws. (oh, and hearing Sam ask the information guy
questions about his bee hive.) Larina
got into the spirit of things, and we constantly heard her screaming to the
boys to come and see what she had found – swords, fish, another skeleton…. The kids will tell you their favourite part
was the tram and bus ride there…of course.
Day three was spent in Glenelg – where else. We were all pretty tired by this stage. Lack of sleep (thanks to the club next door,
and storms the previous night… and the lovely children who are camping
diagonally from us… they wake up earlier and noisier than our children!) So it was a pretty chilled day wandering
streets and attempting to keep the kids from whinging… unsuccessfully. (They were just missing the art
gallery.) Oh – speaking of which – we
now have a couple of golden boxes filled with their plasticine creations from
kids centre at the art gallery… so we look forward to towing them around with
us.
Ben doing a solo on the camper -- what happened to "when everything fails ...be nice to one another", that didn't last long. Tell me, did Sam get to look at the cutouts from the front before the photo, or was the girl his choice?
