After leaving Kalbarri and in convoy with the Bucknell’s we
headed for Tamala Station which was our camp spot before heading out to Steep
Point ( the most Westerly point on the Australian mainland) Just a short 300km + drive the last part
being on a very dusty corrugated road.
We set up right on the beach just a few meters shy of the bay. At dinner
we all enjoyed the sun setting and were amazed how it just got better and
better. When the kids settled, Mandy & I, Dunc and Nat, sat outside with a
cuppa and watched the stars and shooting stars on one of the best nights of the
trip so far.
The next morning we were up early and off by 7am to get to Steep
Point some 180km away. The road out there was one of the worst corrugated roads
we have been on yet, but bring on the adventure. We had some soft sand dune
driving and more corrugated roads before finally making it to the Point. It didn’t
disappoint, incredible!! We completed the usual photos (a camera stand was
permanently fixed facing the right way- what a great idea) then we all just
enjoyed the moment. The kids got busy making rock ‘cairns’ and a home for a
lizard that Nick caught. Gee he is good at catching and spotting
wildlife. Duncan broke out his kite, which we all enjoyed having a crack
at. (Mandy took a bit of practice –
almost wiped out everyone’s heads a few times in the process) The weather was amazing and the water looked
so good we decided to eat lunch in the car on the way back to the swimming
beach. We all jumped into beautiful
clear warm water soaked up the spot, then reluctantly hopped into the car for
the bumpy ride home. Dinner done we crashed
early. The next morning we packed up the campers before having our own little
church service, and a spot of fishing. No luck but good fun.
